Personally, I'd go with a VM on decent hardware and virtualize XP. If you DO need to run older windows, then they may also install on FreeDOS. ![]() It’s important we note that some updates made in these preview OS builds include background improvements that ensure a quality and stable build for Xbox consoles. As of February 2022, it is still considered feature-incomplete alpha software, and is therefore recommended by the developers only for evaluation and testing purposes. Xbox Insider Release Notes Alpha Skip-Ahead (2308.230807-2200) Hey Xbox Insiders We have a new Xbox Update Preview coming to the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring. You can run pretty much any other OS in a VM and the software will not know anything about that, so as far as the runnning software is concerned, it is running in DOS6 or whatever.īe careful about licensing restrictions for MS stuff - you are probably OK in practice with older versions of Windows and DOS though. ReactOS has been in development since 1996. As others have said, virtualisation is probably the way to go if your machine has enough resources. There are many advantages to using a Linux distro - free, no licensing implications, modern, supported etc. It's a fun thing to play with, and it doesn't have any licencing implications. IIRC it does have a terminal that may run old DOS tools. I play with a build every few years and it's excellent for a FOSS Windows replacement. Well, ReactOS is still alpha ( - see RH sidebar). You could target its successor, Zandronum, especially if its multiplayer support interests you (for this purpose there are many maps/mods built to support both GZDoom and Zandronum, with the former recommended for single-player and the latter for multiplayer). Skulltag's been discontinued for over a decade so I wouldn't recommend it. Odamex also supports vanilla demos and is a good choice for vanilla-style multiplayer, but is based off a very old version of ZDoom and I'm not sure how complete its ACS support is: Unlike ZDoom, it's still capable of recording and playing back vanilla demos with the appropriate settings, so it's got that going for it at least. ![]() It's an advanced source port in its capabilities (play Heartland for a good showcase of its abilities), but retains a relatively vanilla feel for what it is. What would you recommend for the closest vanilla feel? I also saw that Skulltag and Eternity might work. ago It's definitely a really cool thing, conceptually. I said in that post I'd use GLBoom, but I got pretty sick of it. ReactOS may be still in alpha with lots and lots of things left to do, but it's still one of my favorite open-source projects.
